Course Title: Tourism vs. Pilgrimage: City, Citizens, Sightseers, and the Environment

Course Objectives:
The course will address the inter-woven relationship of cities, citizens, sightseers, and the environment. Specifically, the course will look at these aspects as they express themselves in Jerusalem and the surrounding regions. The course will deal with the three main factors of this symbiotic relationship: tourism as part of the economic and social development of the city, the systemic limitations on the city and its citizens, and the obstacles facing the citizens and sightseers within the city. The course will attempt to assess the recent efforts to create appropriate and effective management of all these elements so that the citizens and sightseers will have a positive effect on the city environment.

1. Sustainable tourism
2. Social and economic effects of citizens and sightseers on the city
3. Environmental conflicts and crises caused by citizens and sightseers
4. Tourism development as an infrastructure factor: development vs. developing nations,
urban vs. rural
5. Foundations for development: inherent sources, elementary infrastructures
Course Requirements:
Reading submission of assignment based on bibliography 20%
Final exam based on class discussion and reading assignments 80%
